The CTE Application opens on Oct. 21, 2024 at 3 p.m. and closes on November 8, 2024 at 5 p.m.

Maurice J. McDonough High School offers 3 Career and Technical application-based programs. The application is open to CCPS students and NON-CCPS students who reside in Charles County and are currently in the 8th grade.   Students who live in the McDonough zone would need to complete an application to be considered for a CTE program.

CTE programs at McDonough


Students eligible to apply must meet the following qualifications:

  • Both the student and parent/guardian must be current residents of Charles County.
  • The student must be currently enrolled (SY 2024-25) as an 8th grader in a Charles County Public Schools middle school, private school, or is homeschooled.
  • No formal dance instruction is required.

Admission decisions are made based on the following criteria:

  • 60% Audition for Dance and Theatre; Interest Survey Responses for Interactive Media
  • 25% Grades in core subject areas
  • 10% CCPS students, Xello lesson completion; non-CCPS students, O*Net Interest Profiler completion
  • 5% CCPS students, program student applies to matches the career cluster identified in Xello; non-CCPS students, O*Net Interest Profiler results

Application

CCPS STUDENTS

  • Students enrolled in CCPS answered a set of questions through Xello match maker. Results can be accessed through the student's clever account.
  • Student completes the online application using their Office 365 account.
  • Student and Parent/Guardian electronically sign the application.
  • Interactive Media applicants complete the Interest Survey, applicants will be contacted.
  • Dance and Theatre applicants must attend an audition on Sat., Dec. 7, 2024 from 9 a.m. to noon at Maurice J. McDonough High School. Choreography will be sent to families to memorize for audition. Makeup date is Sat., Jan. 4, 2025 from 9 a.m. to noon.
  • Interactive Media applicants complete an Interest Survey. Applicants will be contacted for date and time.

NON-CCPS STUDENTS

Before beginning the application:

  • Student completes the O*Net Career Cluster Interest Profiler by visiting O*NET Interest Profiler at My Next Move.

    • Student answers the set of questions.

    • Once completed, the student takes a picture or screenshot of the Interest Profiler results.

  • Parent and student review the High School Program of Studies for program/course specific information.
  • Student identifies first and second choice programs of greatest interest (second choice optional).
  • Parent and student collect sixth and seventh grade end-of-year report cards. When available, eighth grade quarter 1 report cards will also be required.
    • Either scan or take a photo of your report card.

    • Save each report card separately to your device.

    • When you click on the Select File(s) button, select the appropriate grade level report saved on your device.

Completing and Submitting the application:

  • Student completes the online application with all required information, including uploading O*NET Interest Profiler results and copies of sixth and seventh grade report cards. If available, the eighth grade quarter 1 report card can be uploaded in the application but is not required when submitting the application. If the eighth grade report card is not submitted with the application, after the application window closes a request for the report card will be sent to the parent email provided in the application.
  • Parent and Student review that all information has been filled in accurately. Parent and Student Sign.
  • Dance and Theatre applicants must attend an audition on Sat., Dec. 7, 2024 from 9 a.m. to noon at Maurice J. McDonough High School. Choreography will be sent to families to memorize for audition. Makeup date is Sat., Jan. 4, 2025 from 9 a.m. to noon.
  • Interactive Media applicants complete an Interest Survey. Applicants will be contacted for date and time.

Audition Process for Dance and Theatre Programs

Selection Process

Once the application process is closed, a committee will meet to determine a qualifying score for each program.  All students who meet the qualifying score will be considered a candidate for their first CTE program choice. If they are randomly selected for their 1st choice, they will not be placed in the lottery for their second choice. If they are not randomly selected for their second choice, they will be waitlisted in random order for both programs. Waitlisted students will be randomly ranked and offered a seat if it becomes available.

Acceptance Requirements

In February 2025, letters of acceptance will be mailed. The letter of acceptance will contain an acceptance/decline agreement. Within two weeks of receipt, the acceptance/decline agreement must be signed and returned.  If the acceptance agreement is not received within two weeks, Maurice J. McDonough High School will consider the acceptance as declined by the parent and the student.
